Recently, we had the chance to work with a couple who both came from very different backgrounds! The bride and her family were all from Japan, but the groom and his family were all from Mexico! It was such a blast to learn more about both cultures and see both of their traditions incorporated into their reception! Here are a few of the fun things we were able to experience during this reception!
-There is a Japanese legend that says that cranes are good luck, and that 1,000 paper cranes symbolize longevity, fidelity, and good fortune! As a favor for all of this couple's guests, the bride and her bridesmaids made paper cranes that sat at each place setting. They were absolutely beautiful and in so many different colors!
-It is also customary in Japan for the couple's friends to perform in some sort of way for the couple. The bridesmaids at this wedding sang a karaoke song for the bride and groom and then the groomsmen put on monkey masks and did a little song and dance for them as well. It was definitely a party!
-The Japanese also honor their parents, traditionally during the reception by the reading of letters to them or in very personal toasts. In this case, the bride read a letter to her mother and father in Japanese while the translation was placed on a projection screen for guests to read in English. It was a very touching part of the evening!
-In Mexico, wedding meals traditionally consist of some sort of rice, beans, tortillas, beef and chicken. This is exactly the sort of meal that the couple and all of their guests were able to partake in. Family members of the groom made all of the food and brought it in to be served by Tapestry House staff.
-It is also tradition to have a Mariachi band play at the reception and/or ceremony. The couple brought in a Mariachi band to play music throughout the evening. It consisted of trumpets, guitars, and drums and was a great way to bring in aspects of his culture to the day. Everyone was on the floor dancing and they did some great dances that almost all of the guests knew or learned!
