Learning so much from today's wedding! They are incorporating some of the most fun traditions since the bride is Russian.
1.) They are eating "bread & salt". Mother of the Bride baked a loaf of bread for the bride and groom to tear a piece off of the loaf. Whoever breaks the larger piece off is the head of the household. Then they eat the bread with a pinch of salt. The bread representing Russian hospitality as bread is the most respected food and the salt represents long friendship. (Historically Russia has had a very high tax on salt so it was seen as a symbol of prosperity as well).
2.) The bread gets put on a beautiful Rushnyk, an embroidered ceremonial cloth.
3.) They broke a plate at the ceremony. The Russian tradition involves everyone greeting the couple into the reception with a toast and then throwing their champagne flutes on the floor for good luck. For safety reasons, they chose to break a single plate at the ceremony instead. They even wrapped it in a beautiful fabric so they could keep the pieces for good luck. (Also so no one was hurt by flying shards of glass ;)
Congratulations to today's newlyweds! We hope you have as many happy years as the hundreds of shards you have made today! "Khleb da sol!" (Meaning "Bread and Salt!", the traditional greeting for the wedding couple into the reception)
